Promoting Sustainable Farming Practices Through Hydroponics Training
From March 9–15, the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Unit (LVV), in collaboration with Hydroponics Technologies Aruba, hosted a hydroponics training. Three enthusiastic and motivated groups participated in sessions on nutrients, fertilisers, growing media, and water quality, gaining hands-on experience building backyard hydroponic systems.
This training is part of the Strategic Action Plan for Sustainable Agriculture’s (SAPSA) efforts to create an enabling environment for the professionalisation of the agriculture and livestock sector. Under the five selected business cases—chosen based on factors such as demonstrated demand, profitability, value addition potential, health and nutritional benefits, climate suitability, and the opportunity to achieve higher quality through local production—hydroponics was identified as a key subject for developing sustainable agricultural practices.
Participants interested in starting commercial hydroponics businesses will receive guidance from the Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Unit and trainers, including support to access credit and essential tools. Under SAPSA, at least five producers will be supported in establishing commercial hydroponics operations. Records will be maintained to track gender and age, ensuring the programme benefits a diverse group.
In the coming months, advanced hydroponics training will be organised for participants seeking to further develop their skills, along with aquaponics training.
