The European Union and Iceland signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation on fisheries and ocean affairs. This framework aims for deeper collaboration on sustainable fisheries, scientific research, and marine conservation, while also protecting marine biodiversity and supporting the energy transition in fisheries and aquaculture.
Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, and Icelands Minister of Industry, Hanna Katrín Friðriksson, reaffirmed the strong partnership between the EU and Iceland, based on shared values and long-standing cooperation.
A key feature of the MoU is an annual high-level dialogue, hosted alternately by the EU and Iceland to monitor progress and advance common interests. The first meeting is set for early 2026.
Strengthened cooperation on Fisheries and Ocean conservation
Commissioner Kadis and Minister Friðriksson discussed various fisheries and ocean issues, stressing the need for a comprehensive agreement on shared stocks in the North-East Atlantic and sustainable blue economy practices, as well as cetacean conservation.
Both sides underscored the importance of international cooperation, guided by the best scientific advice.
The EU and Iceland also recognized the need to align efforts with global biodiversity commitments, including those in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, to support sustainable activities and protect vulnerable species.
Urgent call for action on Ocean Governance
The EU and Iceland highlighted the urgent need to ratify the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement, which will enhance the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing global ocean governance through effective multilateral cooperation.
Background
The EU and Iceland have a solid partnership in fisheries and ocean affairs, with a long history of cooperation. This MoU strengthens that partnership by providing a framework for enhanced collaboration on shared interests.
The signature of this MoU reinforces the EU’s leadership in ocean diplomacy, a key objective of the European Ocean Pact. By promoting effective ocean governance globally, the EU aims to protect the health of our oceans, safeguard biodiversity, and support the communities that depend on them.
