On April 4, 2025, the first Central Asia-European Union Summit was held in Samarkand, chaired by Uzbekistans President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The EU was represented by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Other attending leaders included the Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
The summit marked a new era of strategic cooperation between the EU and Central Asia, focusing on strengthening economic and trade relations, transport, and cooperation on critical raw materials. A €12 billion investment package was announced as part of the Global Gateway strategy.

The leaders emphasized their commitment to peace, security, democracy, and international law. They also discussed Uzbekistan and Turkmenistans accession to the World Trade Organization and supported sustainable transport infrastructure.
The European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will invest in the region in energy, water management, and transport.
EU leaders thanked President Mirziyoyev for the hospitality and successful summit organization.
