Thank you President, Honourable members,
The blackout in the Iberian Peninsula highlighted the critical nature of our grid infrastructure and the power of community resilience. People came together to help each other, demonstrating what truly matters in times of crisis.
We commend the swift actions of the authorities and workers in Spain, Portugal, and France in restoring power. The Commission fully supports the investigations by ENTSO-E and eagerly awaits their insights.
This event underscores the necessity of crisis preparedness, a core part of our Action Plan for Affordable Energy. Our goal is to enhance energy security and transition to a more sustainable energy system.
We will continue to strengthen Europes energy security through legislative measures and by improving our energy infrastructure. Key areas include integration, interconnection, and investment in modern energy grids.
An Energy Union Task Force will be established to improve coordination across Member States, and a Grids Package will be proposed to address infrastructure challenges.
Interconnectors are crucial for system resilience, enabling countries to support each other during energy shortages.
Investments in 21st-century grids are essential to meet modern challenges, supporting clean energy projects for climate objectives and to ensure affordable energy.
The blackout serves as a reminder that energy security cannot be taken for granted and highlights the importance of solidarity in crisis situations.
We must collaborate to build a strong and sustainable European Energy Union, ensuring clean, secure energy for our future.
Thank you for your attention; I look forward to this debate.
