Commissioner Valakati, Your Excellencies,
The futures of Europe and Africa are deeply connected. This African Union–European Union meeting highlights our shared prosperity goals. Africa, with its youthful energy and ambition, is a vital partner in building a brighter future for all.
Since renewing our partnership in 2022, our joint vision for 2030 is making progress, as shown in todays report. The Global Gateway Africa–Europe Investment Package is transforming sectors with sustainable development in mind.
With €239 billion in direct investment and €355 billion in trade, we aim to unlock more potential. This partnership focuses on mutual benefits, as seen in:
- Africas renewable energy capabilities complement Europes energy security needs.
- Both continents face climate change challenges.
- Infrastructure development offers educational and job opportunities.
- Africas raw materials are key to Europes modernization efforts.
We are committed to building local value chains and sustainable industries in Africa.
Recent successes include green-hydrogen steel production in Namibia and the Zambia–Tanzania Power Interconnector. These projects open new markets and job opportunities.
Health initiatives are thriving, with African-produced vaccines and technologies advancing rapidly.
A new agreement with the Confederation of African Football will support youth programs and highlight Global Gateway investments, engaging Africas youth through football.
The Global Gateway marks a new era in our cooperation. We aim for an equal partnership that delivers tangible benefits and fosters long-term prosperity through open dialogue.
Todays discussion focuses on refining investments and aligning on energy, trade, and digitalization. I look forward to your insights.
