High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
Today, we adopted key proposals for the White Paper on European Defence and the ReArm Europe Plan Readiness 2030. These initiatives aim to strengthen the European defence industry and cooperation among Member States. We are introducing new legislation to bolster defence capabilities and ensure financial flexibility. We will discuss these details further, and Commissioner Kubilius will join me in addressing your questions.
The White Paper focuses on enhancing defence capabilities by identifying gaps and proposing collaborative solutions. It emphasizes replenishing European military resources and supporting Ukraine with necessary defence systems. Our collective efforts will provide a competitive edge, ensuring stronger and more integrated European defence.
Furthermore, we highlight the importance of international collaboration, working with partners like the UK, Australia, Canada, and Japan to maintain global peace and stability. The White Paper also includes measures for direct support to Ukraine, ensuring its defence readiness against ongoing threats.
To conclude, todays proposals set a foundation for enhanced European defence, aligning with NATO targets and promoting peace and stability across Europe.
Commissioner Andrius Kubilius
Thank you, Kaja. The White Paper outlines four key priorities: increasing defence spending, closing capability gaps, supporting Ukraine, and strengthening Europes defence industry. These priorities are essential for achieving Readiness 2030.
Our ambition is to turn these strategic goals into tangible actions. Implementation is crucial, and we must work collectively to build a robust defence framework. The SAFE proposal adopted today is pivotal for enhancing our defence capabilities and supporting Ukraine.
In conclusion, our security depends on a united approach to defence, ensuring that Europe is prepared to face any challenges and maintain peace.
