Good morning to everyone who has come to Belgium despite the national strike. Thank you for your commitment to being here.
This is my first appearance here, and I am pleased to be part of this platform. The platform plays an important role in shaping the Commissions animal welfare policy. Today is an opportunity to reflect on what we have achieved and to look towards the future.
We will work on legislative proposals regarding animal protection during transport and the welfare of dogs and cats. It is important that these proposals are approved quickly so that we can begin implementation.
Illegal animal trade must be addressed, and we will collaborate with Europol and other agencies to combat it. Digitalization measures should help with traceability and prevent fraud.
We also need to improve rules for animal transport. There are currently too many ambiguities that hinder enforcement. Better oversight can significantly improve animal welfare.
Technology can help improve enforcement and control of both exports and imports. We want to remain competitive while meeting welfare standards.
The European Citizens Initiative on ending cages shows the concerns of citizens. We are working on proposals to achieve this.
Today we focus on the poultry sector. This marks the start of a dialogue with stakeholders about the regulations.
National rules have sometimes disrupted the internal market. We need to work in a coordinated manner and stay in dialogue with all stakeholders.
Innovation is essential for improving animal welfare. New technologies can reduce costs and improve welfare.
Today is the last meeting under the current mandate of the Platform. The mandate is extended until 2030 and expanded with experts on dog and cat welfare.
Thank you for your dedication. I am happy to answer your questions.
