The House of Representatives will debate on Thursday, June 26, about the Asylum Emergency Measures Act and the Law on the Introduction of a Two-Status System. The aim of these proposals is to relieve the Dutch asylum chain and reduce the influx of asylum seekers into the Netherlands. The debate can be followed from 10:15 AM via the livestream and the Debat Direct app.
Minister of Asylum and Migration, David van Weel, and Minister for Asylum and Migration, Mona Keijzer, will come to the House for this. The proposals were submitted in March of this year by former minister Marjolein Faber.
Reducing Influx
The Asylum Emergency Measures Act aims to shorten the validity period of the temporary asylum residence permit: from five to three years. Additionally, no permanent asylum residence permits will be granted anymore. The possibilities to declare foreigners who no longer legally reside in the Netherlands as undesirable will also be expanded.
Relieving the Dutch Asylum Chain
To relieve the pressure on the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND), the intention procedure will be abolished. This procedure means that asylum seekers are informed in writing of the INDs intention to reject an asylum application. The proposal also limits the possibilities for family reunification. This is done by excluding that unmarried partners and adult children who are joining can receive a derived temporary asylum residence permit.
Two-Status System
The Law on the Introduction of a Two-Status System also proposes to distinguish between refugees and people who receive protection for other reasons. For the second group, more conditions will apply for family reunification. This also aims to reduce the influx of joiners.
