The Public Prosecution Service (OM) can impose penalties for common offenses. It aims to do so more often to handle more cases. The Committee for Justice and Security organizes a round table on Wednesday, March 26, to hear the views of experts and stakeholders. You can follow the meeting live from 10:00 AM.
The OM announced in February that it wants to use the criminal order more frequently. It aims not only to handle cases faster but also to address more cases criminally. Victims also benefit when cases are quickly addressed, their damages are compensated, and a lengthy legal process is avoided.
Compensation
Together with victim organizations, the OM wants to develop a guide for simple damage cases. Standard compensation amounts can be included, so victims are not burdened with providing proof of damage.
Program
Representatives from the police, judiciary, legal profession, and OM will participate in the round table. These are the participants:
- Rinus Otte, Chairman of the Board of Prosecutors General
- Janny Knol, Chief of Police
- Henk Naves, Chairman of the Council for the Judiciary
- Karin de Lange, member of the General Council of the Dutch Bar Association
What is a round table discussion?
The standing committees of the House of Representatives regularly organize hearings and round table discussions. Experts or stakeholders are asked to explain the topic to be discussed. Several participants engage with MPs simultaneously, creating a mutual discussion and clarifying differences in views. MPs use the input from the round table discussion in handling government policy.
