Green Left-Labor Party Presents Agricultural Vision: Good Food, Good Farming

On a biological dairy farm, the Green Left-Labor Party presents its long-term vision for Dutch agriculture and food supply: Good Food, Good Farming.

Dutch agriculture is among the most developed in the world, but is under immense pressure. Farmers are caught in a system that forces them to scale up and intensify, while nature and the living environment continue to deteriorate. The current agricultural model is unsustainable and calls for a fundamental course change.

“The agricultural debate has been stuck for years,” says Member of Parliament Laura Bromet. “We can no longer afford to get lost in political stagnation. We must make tough choices for nature restoration and healthy food production, but that can only happen if we also engage society in this change.”

Long-term Agricultural Vision

Therefore, the Green Left-Labor Party presents a vision that is not imposed from above, but built from below. It has been written by the agricultural working groups of Green Left and the Labor Party. Farmers, food experts, scientists, and nature organizations have collaborated on a plan that sustainably connects agriculture, nature, and food production. “The farmer is more than a producer: he is the guardian of the landscape and a driving force behind communities,” says Bromet. “Our vision is an invitation to dialogue, because only together can we build a fair and future-proof food system.”

Key Points

  • Healthy and affordable food for everyone
Access to healthy food should not depend on ones wallet. We make healthy eating cheaper and limit stacking discounts on unhealthy products.
  • Fair prices and perspective for farmers
Farmers will gain a strong negotiating position and will be rewarded for sustainable practices. Polluting subsidies will disappear, while new revenue models such as nature management and regional markets will be supported.
  • Agriculture and nature in balance
Less fertilizer and chemical crop protection, more biodiversity, and a stable ecosystem.
  • A vibrant countryside
Investments in regional cooperation, local food production, and facilities that keep villages livable.
  • Active government policy
The government must stimulate sustainable agricultural policy and ensure fair relations between farmers, consumers, and nature.

“In 15 years we can have our basics in order. By 2040, our agriculture can thrive economically and ecologically again,” says Bromet. “But that requires courageous choices. Today we make those. And we invite other parties and civil society to do the same.”

Save the date

On Friday afternoon, May 16, we would like to discuss our agricultural vision with members and interested parties in Kamerik. Invitation and program will follow as soon as possible, keep an eye on our agenda. We hope to see you there!
