Draft Environmental Vision for Fryslân open for inspection: a recognisable Fryslân, ready for the future
The Provincial Executive of Fryslân has adopted the Draft Provincial Environmental Vision (POVI). This means the province is making a clear choice. After all, in Fryslân, challenges are piling up — from housing and energy to water, nature and accessibility — while space is simply limited. The Draft POVI will be open for inspection from 11 March to 21 April 2026.
Deputy Sijbe Knol: “With this Environmental Vision, we ensure that Fryslân remains recognisable in its landscape and living environment, while also being ready for the future. Space is tight and the challenges are great. Choices therefore have to be made. In short: making space for the future without breaking with what makes Fryslân special.”
The Environmental Vision outlines Fryslân’s course towards 2050, with clear choices for our living environment. We are working towards strong nature and future-proof agriculture, with water and soil as the foundation. In towns and villages, space will be created for housing construction, so that young people can build a future here and older residents can live appropriately and age healthily. At the same time, we are gradually building a fossil-free and circular province with a reliable and affordable energy supply.
Effects of the Draft POVI
The Environmental Impact Report (OER) shows that the choices in the Draft POVI are expected to have a positive effect on most topics for Fryslân. The vision scores particularly well on broad prosperity: there are positive effects on employment, facilities, attractive business locations, social cohesion and inclusivity. The choices made also have a favourable impact on socio-economic points.
Participation
The vision was developed in collaboration with the Frisian authorities, social organisations, businesses and our residents. Their ideas and ambitions, but also their concerns, were used in shaping this vision. After all, we are making the future of Fryslân together.
Open for inspection
From 11 March to 21 April 2026, the Draft POVI and accompanying documents will be open for inspection. During this period, you can submit your opinion by filing a view. You can find out how to do this at Omgevingsvisie Fryslân .
After 21 April 2026, the province will review all responses. The Provincial Council will then make a decision on the definitive adoption of the POVI, which is expected to take place in September 2026.
