22 April marks the start of the 40th anniversary season of the Gouvernement
On Wednesday, 22 April 2026, it will be exactly 40 years since the Gouvernement on the Maas in Maastricht was officially opened by then-Queen Beatrix. This special occasion marks the start of a celebratory anniversary season in which our house of democracy takes centre stage.
On this date, the kick-off will take place with a festive gathering where residents, administrators and stakeholders come together to reflect on democracy, freedom and meeting one another.
Join the discussion, meet others and celebrate democracy
During this afternoon, meeting and exchange are at the heart of the event. Under the guidance of Twan Huys, speakers and the public will engage in conversation about current themes surrounding freedom and democracy. Taking part in the discussion are economist and publicist Marcia Luyten, Arabist and former member of the Senate Petra Stienen, Chief Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs and opinion maker Simon van Teutem.
There will also be plenty of opportunities for experience and creativity:
- Live music and dance performances by, among others, Lioumusic, Oxygen and Herfshane;
- Creative challenges where visitors contribute input for artworks by Limburg-based artists;
- A chance to win a unique artwork after the event;
- A festive closing with DJ, snacks and drinks.

The celebration will take place on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, between 13:30 and 18:30 at the Gouvernement on the Maas, Maastricht. You can find all the information and register directly on the project website (links to an external website).
Limburg and democracy
Limburg is investing heavily in democracy. This is done, among other things, through Prinsjesdag in the Region, but also through the democracy tables: a dialogue format organised by the province to bring residents directly into conversation with each other and with administrators about democracy. Through open discussions with people from all kinds of different backgrounds, who would never meet each other in their daily ‘algorithm’, they share stories and views about their experiences and concerns regarding democracy. The goal? Greater involvement, understanding and trust.
