Work on the Willem I Lock
The Province of North Holland will begin cleaning work in the water near the Willem I Lock in Amsterdam on Tuesday, 7 April.
The work is part of an upgrade to the lock, which will restore the small chamber of the lock to make it suitable for shipping and future remote operation.
Cleaning the lock chamber
The Willem I Lock, located opposite Amsterdam Central Station, consists of two chambers. The chamber is the enclosed space in a lock where ships are held while the water level is adjusted. The small chamber of the lock has not been used for years. The Province aims to restore it for navigation. For this reason, the bottom of the chamber is being cleaned so that the chamber is deep enough for ships again.
Execution of the work
In the past, a large part of the debris has already been removed from the chamber, including bricks. The remaining material is now being removed by divers. The work is taking place in and next to the lock. For the transport of materials and equipment, a temporary roadway will be laid through Sixhavenpark. A container will also be placed near the lock chamber to remove the debris.
The lock will remain operational during the work. Cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use the lock without any hindrance. Shipping traffic will also not be affected, as the small chamber is currently not in use. The cleaning work is expected to take about a week.
Future work on the Willem I Lock
The cleaning work is the first step in preparing for further work on the Willem I Lock. The Province of North Holland will also replace the lock gates and carry out maintenance work on the lock walls. In 2027, the lock will also be adapted so that it can be operated remotely from the Province of North Holland’s control centre.
