HOV Beverwijk/Velsen-Noord: disruption and extra travel time in May
In May, work on the High-Quality Public Transport (HOV) Beverwijk/Velsen-Noord project will be consolidated.
To combine a large amount of work efficiently, closures and a train-free period are necessary. It’s good to know now that significant congestion and longer travel times are expected in May. This means considerable disruption in May, but improved accessibility afterwards!
Closures and train-free period
The Velsertraverse will be closed for construction work from Friday 15 May at 8:00 PM until Monday 18 May at 5:00 AM, and from Friday 22 May at 8:00 PM until Thursday 28 May at 5:00 AM. Road users will be diverted using signs. Additionally, no trains will run between Beverwijk and Uitgeest from Thursday 7 May at 1:00 AM until Wednesday 13 May at 5:00 AM. NS will deploy buses. Of course, the Province, the municipalities of Beverwijk and Velsen, ProRail, and Heijmans are doing everything possible to minimise inconvenience. For this reason, a large portion of the work will be carried out at weekends and during Pentecost, and work will continue around the clock. Despite this, heavy congestion is expected. In particular, significant disruption is anticipated on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 May. If working from home is an option, that would be a good idea!
Towards better accessibility
A new bus lane will be added in Velsen-Noord, along with a second bus lane between Beverwijk bus station and the Wijckermolen. Furthermore, an underpass for cyclists and pedestrians will be constructed beneath the Velsertraverse. This will be a brand-new connection, which will also feature a special piece of artwork. ProRail will also build a new substation to further expand the rail network’s power supply. Together, these improvements will enhance public transport and the accessibility of Beverwijk and the surrounding area.
