Ouderkerk Bridge fully operational again from 28 March 2026
The Province of North Holland will reopen Ouderkerk Bridge for shipping traffic as of Saturday, 28 March 2026. The repair work on the bridge in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is now almost complete.
The bridge has successfully passed all tests, and dredging work on the Amstel River has also been completed. After nine months of repairs, the bridge will be fully accessible to all road and water traffic on Saturday, 28 March.
Completion of repair and dredging work
Since September 2025, the Province of North Holland has been working on the restoration of Ouderkerk Bridge. The final work was completed in mid-March, and the newly installed rotating mechanism has undergone extensive testing. These tests have been successful. Alongside the repair work, the Province also dredged the Amstel River and reinforced the riverbed at the waiting areas for commercial shipping. These activities have now also been completed.
In the coming period, a few final finishing touches will still be carried out around the bridge. These will cause minimal disruption to road and shipping traffic.
Ouderkerk Bridge closure lifted
As of 28 March 2026, all repair work on Ouderkerk Bridge will be completed. Road traffic on the N522 between Amsterdam Southeast and Amstelveen will then be able to cross the bridge without restrictions. The axle load restriction that has been in place for several years will also be lifted. This means that trucks weighing more than 40 tonnes will once again be permitted to use Ouderkerk Bridge. For shipping traffic, the end of the work means that Ouderkerk Bridge will once again be operational. As a result, the closure of the Amstel River at Ouderkerk Bridge will be lifted on 28 March 2026.
With the completion of the work, Ouderkerk Bridge will have a long service life ahead. The bridge is now safe, reliable, and ready to serve road users and shipping traffic for many years to come.
