Agreement for Geleen-Zuid strengthens the district
With the signing of the eighth and final cooperation agreement in Geleen-Zuid, the Province of Limburg will reach a milestone on Monday, 16 March, as part of its provincial area-focused neighbourhood and village approach.
This marks the Province of Limburg’s long-standing ambition to work with municipalities, social partners and residents to build strong, sustainable neighbourhoods where everyone can participate.
“With the signing of the agreement for Geleen-Zuid, we are concluding a unique series of eight collaborations and putting the finishing touches on our work. These are not just paper agreements – they are joint promises for structural improvement. We are showing that, as a province, together with our partners, we are truly committed to investing in the future of our neighbourhoods and villages. For every resident of Limburg, for every family and for every community,” said Deputy Marc van Caldenberg.
Key agreements on Geleen-Zuid
In Geleen-Zuid, work has been underway for several years on the Luuj Make Gelaen Zuid programme. This programme for Geleen-Zuid is characterised by an integrated approach aimed at creating a healthy and safe neighbourhood by 2030. This is being achieved through five programme lines: healthy upbringing and staying healthy, safety through community spirit, prospects for work, independent ageing, and a robust physical-spatial programme. The partners – including the municipality of Sittard-Geleen, ZOwonen, MIK & PIW, Triade, Graaf Huyn College, Waterschap Limburg, the neighbourhood platform and the Province of Limburg – are pooling their efforts and contributing extra resources to these tasks.
Investing in people
Van Caldenberg is pleased with the agreement for Geleen-Zuid. “Geleen-Zuid shows that social challenges and investments in public space go hand in hand. The agreements we are making today are ambitious: together, we will ensure greater cohesion, more safety and more job opportunities. We are not just investing in buildings, but above all in people.”
Foundation for security of livelihood
The Deputy emphasises the importance of all eight agreements: “Today is a cause for celebration, but above all, it is a new beginning. Limburg is now taking concrete steps to build strong neighbourhoods together. This goes beyond laying bricks; it is about a society in which everyone matters. In Geleen-Zuid – and in all eight areas – we are working together to create a foundation of security of livelihood, safety and prospects for young and old. We are committed to a sustainable future in which people are at the heart of everything we do.”
€10 million for neighbourhoods and villages
The Province of Limburg is investing a total of €10 million in the Area-focused Neighbourhood and Village Approach, aimed at structurally improving liveability and security of livelihood in eight locations. These are: Kerkrade-Oost, the Vastenavondkamp district in Blerick (Venlo), Heerlen-Noord, the Nazareth and Pottenberg districts in Maastricht, Donderberg in Roermond, the Offenbeek district in Reuver (Beesel), Geleen-Zuid and Vaals. Since every neighbourhood is different, the approach remains tailored to each area. Plans are therefore drawn up in consultation with residents to ensure they fit the environment and the people who live there.
