Preferred solution for safer crossing of Westerterpweg in Slootdorp
The Province of North Holland and the municipality of Hollands Kroon have taken an important step to make crossing the Westerterpweg (N240) in Slootdorp safer.
At the end of December, the deputy of the province and the alderman of Hollands Kroon selected a preferred solution. This means the plan can now be further developed.
Dangerous crossing
Many schoolchildren who live on the south side of the Westerterpweg but attend school on the north side cross the road. They do so on foot or by bicycle at various points along this busy through road. While relatively few accidents occur, the risk remains high. The crossing in Slootdorp is on the list of 30 high-risk locations that the province aims to improve with relatively simple measures.
What will happen?
From March 2026, engineering firm Antea Group will further develop the chosen solution into a complete design. The following measures will be implemented:
- The two intersections (Koningin Julianalaan and Koningin Beatrixlaan) will be merged into one clear intersection
- The road will be given a slight curve to encourage drivers to reduce their speed
- A central island will be added, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to cross in two stages
- Clear traffic signs will be installed, and additional safety measures for schoolchildren will be investigated
- The bus stops will be slightly relocated
These changes will ensure that everyone can cross more safely.
Planning and follow-up
The design is expected to be completed around the summer holidays of 2026. After that, preparations for implementation will begin, including the tendering process for a contractor. Work is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2027.
From March 2026, the project will be communicated more widely, including through the websites of the province and the municipality.
