Building Together a Strong Region

For nearly twenty years, on the initiative of the national government, work has been underway on Lelystad Airport. The infrastructure is ready. The terminal is in place. Everything is prepared. Opening for passenger flights is of great national importance. For employment, economic development, and a future-proof aviation system.

Strengthening Our Regional Economy

Flevoland is ready to accommodate a major national defense task. In December 2025, the cabinet decided to station F-35s at Lelystad Airport. The synergy benefits of commercial traffic (holiday flights) combined with military shared use are significant. Shared use helps strengthen our regional economy and increases Flevolanders’ control over their own future. It creates opportunities to live, learn, work, and do business—opportunities that connect Flevoland with the Netherlands, and the Netherlands with Flevoland. That is why from Wednesday we actively communicate why Flevoland chooses shared use of Lelystad Airport: Defense and holiday flights.

Fair and Clear Solutions

Shared use also brings challenges, such as nuisance and space claims. That is why we commit to fair, clear, and well-regulated solutions. That is why we work together on Lelystad Airport, and thus on a province where people build their future.
