Reducing the Risk of Wildfires
This is necessary because due to climate change, it is increasingly hot and dry. As a result, wildfires are a growing risk, and we are going to do something about it. The proper design of roadsides along provincial roads ensures that the spread of fire is limited.
Replacing Fire-Sensitive Vegetation
The first step is to indicate which trees need to be removed. We are currently working on this. We mark the trees with a dot. Starting in the autumn of 2025, we will remove conifers and other fire-sensitive vegetation. In a few places, where possible, we will replant broadleaf trees (conversion from coniferous to broadleaf). Broadleaf trees burn less quickly. Furthermore, young trees will grow naturally. After this change, we will maintain the roadsides. This keeps the fire risk as low as possible and keeps the roadsides safe.
Area-Based Wildfire Management Approach
Making roadsides fire-resistant is part of the project Area-Based Wildfire Management Approach. To ensure that fires cannot jump from one area to another, we create sections. These are existing nature areas with space next to the edges. Between these sections are roads, railways, or high-voltage routes (a route where electricity cables run). These ensure that a fire stops.
Designing Fire-Resistant Roadsides
We examined which roadsides are well-designed and which ones we still need to improve. A proper design of the roadside ensures that a fire cannot spread further. A fire-resistant roadside has grasses and herbs, and there are no coniferous trees, such as a pine or fir. Coniferous trees that stand alone and are at least 30 meters apart are not a problem. They do not cause a fire to jump.
Collaboration Project
The project Area-Based Wildfire Management Approach is a collaboration between the 3 safety regions in Gelderland (VRGZ, VGGM, and VNOG) and the province.
Protecting Nature and Residential and Work Areas
Gelderland is rich in nature and beautiful landscapes. We want to keep it that way. A strong nature is important for the well-being of our residents, for recreation, and for sufficient water. Therefore, we must protect, strengthen, and manage nature well. Additionally, this change in the roadsides also contributes to the protection of residential and work areas, recreation businesses, care institutions, and energy supply. This is important not only now but also for future generations.
