Transdev winning party
Transporters Keolis and Transdev both made offers to provide regional public transport in this region. Both offers met the requirements set out in the Program of Requirements. An expert team carefully evaluated the offers. Transdevs offer was the best. Bidders were assessed according to an award model: there were 100 points to be earned in various categories. The parties could earn the most points based on service hours. The other components, including the transport plan, were assessed on quality. The winning bid ensures significant improvements.
More buses and wider service periods
Buses will run more frequently. They will start earlier in the morning and end later in the evening. This will happen in both urban and rural areas. There is a guarantee of accessibility. This means that all centers with more than 500 inhabitants will receive public transport (OV) for 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. As a result, the number of service hours will increase by 22% compared to 2024.
Network improvement
The network will improve significantly. Passengers will travel more directly and faster because the connections between the lines are better. The various service lines will also run longer. They will also run in new areas, such as the new residential area in Ede-Oost. This will improve the coverage of public transport. The network will become easier to understand, and new lines will be added. For example, a new line will connect Loo and Groessen. The busy city lines in Arnhem and Nijmegen and the busy regional lines are part of the main network. During peak hours (between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM and between 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM), buses on busy lines will run 6 times per hour, and 4 times per hour during off-peak hours (all other hours outside peak times). The schedule will also be expanded in the evenings and weekends. Even outside the cities, buses will run more frequently on lines that will fall within the basic network. For example, buses will also run in the evening and on Sundays on the route between Zevenaar and Tolkamer.
Zero Emission
From the start, as many zero-emission buses as possible will be deployed. By December 12, 2026, all buses (except for neighborhood buses) will be zero emission. This means that the buses will be emission-free. Despite issues with our power grid, ways have been found by the transporter to ensure sufficient power supply. This is largely achieved by utilizing connections from companies that have excess power. Contingency options have also been outlined in case of setbacks during implementation. In the first half year of the new concession, CNG buses running on green gas will also still be in operation.
Campusnet
Three campus lines will be introduced to transport passengers during peak times of the day in extra-long 25-meter buses. The longest buses currently are 18 meters. The campus network includes the following lines:
- Nijmegen station – Heijendaal campus
- Arnhem CS station – HAN
- Ede-Wageningen station – WUR campus
During peak times of the day, 25-meter buses will operate on these routes. These buses have 5 doors, making it easier to get on and off. On the routes to HAN and WUR, these 25-meter buses will operate during peak hours. The campus network will also run on Sunday evenings due to the demand from students.
Trolleybuses 2.1 with battery
The Rijnlijn Arnhem – Wageningen will be extended to WUR and Ede-Wageningen station without the need for additional facilities. This is due to the deployment of new trolley 2.1 buses that have a battery on board with a larger range. The current 10 trolley 2.0 buses will continue to operate, but all other trolleybuses will be replaced by new trolleybuses from the start. Trolleybuses will be deployed on 4 different city lines in Arnhem where no trolleybuses currently operate. More trolleybuses will also be sent into the region without requiring additional facilities. This will allow trolleybuses to also reach Ede, Heteren, Duiven, Westervoort, Elst, and Nijmegen. In Elst and Nijmegen, there will be a line under the brand name comfortRRRei that will be operated with new trolleybuses and will also connect the campuses Heijendaal and HAN.
Night buses
A night network will be established with 13 lines that will operate on Saturdays between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM. Extra staff will be deployed for service and safety. For example, it will be possible to travel from Arnhem to Dieren, from Nijmegen to Druten, and from Ede to Barneveld.
RRReis
In the entire transport area, neighborhood buses and buses will operate under the brand name RRReis. The joint transport brand of the provinces of Gelderland, Overijssel, and Flevoland.
Developments during concession
Since the contract has a 10-year duration, it is important to be able to respond to current events and new developments. In collaboration with municipalities, regions, and the transporter, improvements for the city and region will be further developed during the term. Development teams will address urbanization and housing challenges, as well as accessibility in rural areas. For the Provincial States of Gelderland, it is possible to adjust to current events during the term through a framework letter.
