The free membership fits within the provinces policy to tackle illiteracy and increase opportunities for residents. Through this project, Limburg residents with low income gain access to (online) books, digital information, and support to improve their basic skills.
Equal opportunities for everyone
Deputy Marc van Caldenberg calls it a milestone Limburg can be proud of. Reading, learning, and participating in society should never depend on the contents of your wallet. With this free membership, we literally open doors for those who need it most.
Thanks to the membership, people can work on their reading, writing, and digital skills. They also receive support in using the library and its services.
Start in 2025, expansion in 2026
In 2025, three municipalities — Landgraaf, Venlo, and Gennep — began issuing free memberships. In 2026, the province will expand the project to all Limburg municipalities with their own library facilities.
