The existing 150 kV high-voltage connection has reached the end of its technical lifespan, already experiences grid congestion, and offers insufficient transmission capacity for future energy demand. Network operator TenneT has therefore taken the initiative to renew and reinforce the connection within the current route from 210 MegaVolt-Amperes (MVA) to 500 MVA, including replacement of the pylons. Due to the project crossing municipal boundaries, TenneT has asked the Province to act as the competent authority.

Key spatial considerations along the route include the landing of the connection at the Beek high-voltage station and the investigation of a possible rerouting around the Klimmen core. The Province is working closely with the municipalities of Beek and Voerendaal on this.

Deputy Theuns (Space, Housing, Water, Soil and Livability) emphasizes the importance of a careful approach: The renewal and reinforcement of the Graetheide-Beek-Schoonbron connection is complex. But the sustainability of South Limburg cannot wait. By taking on the role of competent authority, we as the Province take maximum control to accelerate the procedure. We find it important to communicate with all stakeholders and encourage active participation to jointly arrive at supported solutions.

Deputy Van Caldenberg (Energy) adds: Grid congestion is a serious obstacle to further sustainability and economic development in Limburg. This project is essential to prepare the electricity grid for the growing energy demand of residents and businesses. The Province takes its spatial role to tackle these bottlenecks promptly together with TenneT and the municipalities.

The Environment Committee of the Provincial Council will have the opportunity to submit comments and points of attention. These will be included in the final decision to start the procedure. The procedure is expected to start at the end of January 2026.
