Measures taken by the Province of North Holland in the autumn of 2023 at the intersection of the N248 with the Waardpolderhoofdweg in Kolhorn have improved traffic safety. This is evidenced by research from consulting firm Arcadis.
The speed at the intersection was lowered to 50 kilometers per hour. To ensure that traffic slows down, curves in the road were created before and after the intersection. Stop lines were also implemented, and a stop obligation was established from the Waardpolderhoofdweg. Additionally, the N248 connections to an exit and the Ansjoviskade were removed. Research shows that the measures taken have achieved the desired results.
The safety of the intersection has improved
This conclusion was drawn by consulting firm Arcadis. Arcadis was commissioned by the Province of North Holland to investigate the effectiveness of the implemented measures in terms of safety, speed, and behavior. The research consisted of 3 measurements: early 2022, early 2024, and early 2025. The results of the measurements were compared to get a clear picture of whether the measures had an effect on traffic safety. The results of the measurements have shown that the average speed at the N248-Waardpolderhoofdweg intersection has significantly decreased. Since the speed reduction was implemented in the autumn of 2023, the average speed dropped from 68 kilometers per hour to 57 kilometers per hour. Therefore, the measures taken have improved traffic safety at the intersection.
