To tackle traffic congestion between Amsterdam, Schiphol, and Haarlem, the province, together with the Amsterdam Transport Region, Rijkswaterstaat, and the municipalities of Haarlem, Haarlemmermeer, and Amsterdam, is exploring the possibility of a MetroBus.

On December 3rd, the exploratory phase was formally concluded in an administrative meeting, and the officials decided to take the next step in 2026: preparing a planning study.

A MetroBus is essentially an extended bus (with enclosed wheels) that runs on a dedicated bus lane with its own stops. The route Haarlem-Amsterdam Zuid along the A9 and N205 forms the core of the future MetroBus network.

One Step Closer

Deputy Jeroen Olthof: “Previous research showed that the MetroBus is the best solution to address the increasing pressure on accessibility in the South Kennemerland/IJmond region. With the completion of this phase, the MetroBus is one step closer. I am pleased with this because good and affordable public transport is crucial to keep our province accessible in the future. And with short-term measures, travelers can soon benefit from the first improvements!”
