The Province of North Holland is carrying out emergency repairs on the Westdijk (N244) in Alkmaar. To repair frost damage and fill the potholes, the road will be closed in both directions from Thursday, January 15 at 10:00 PM until Friday, January 16 at 5:00 AM.
The N244 at Overdie, between the junction with the N243 (Noordervaart) and the Boekelerweg, is affected. Traffic will be diverted via the Boekelerweg and the Zuidervaart. Bus line 123 Alkmaar/de Rijp will also follow the detour route.
Potholes and Emergency Repairs
At several locations, including the N242 in Alkmaar, the contractor is busy repairing frost damage. The cause of the damage is the weather. Water enters the asphalt through cracks and pores. This water expands when it freezes, causing internal stresses in the asphalt. This leads to cracks, loose stones, and potholes. This process repeats continuously during freeze-thaw cycles. Road salt worsens the situation by damaging the asphalts bitumen and penetrating deeper than water.
