Every few years, the emergency services conduct an exercise in a tunnel in the province of North Holland.
How should the emergency services act in the event of a tunnel accident? Which emergency services will be on site? And who communicates with whom? This time, the emergency services are practicing in the Abdijtunnel. Buses travel through this tunnel towards Schiphol and Hoofddorp. The exercise is one of the requirements to comply with Dutch tunnel legislation.
Traffic Center Warns Control Room
The tunnels of the province are monitored 24 hours a day from the traffic center in Hoofddorp. The staff keeps a close eye on the screens at all times. They notice every small change. If an accident occurs in the tunnel, the traffic center immediately alerts the control room. The control room then calls in the emergency services.

It is important that the emergency services work well together and that communication between different corps runs smoothly. That is what this exercise is about. Among others, fire brigade, police, ambulance, Schiphol, Royal Marechaussee, the bus transport companies, and the tunnel managers work together for this. Emergency responders, actors, extras, and the people assessing the exercise gather nearby. The exercise leader explains what is expected of the extras.
