Province of North Holland adopts definitive Noise Action Plan 2025-2029
The Province of North Holland has definitively adopted the Noise Action Plan 2025-2029. The plan outlines how the province aims to further reduce noise pollution caused by traffic on provincial roads in the coming years.
The province aims to reduce the number of residents experiencing severe noise nuisance from provincial roads by 50% by 2050 compared to current levels.
50 decibel threshold
At all locations where noise levels at the façade of a home or, for example, a school exceed 50 decibels, the province will examine whether measures can be taken. In North Holland, this currently applies to 20,200 buildings.
Not all 20,200 buildings will be addressed immediately. The province will first focus on approximately one-third of these buildings. These buildings are located along provincial roads where construction work is already planned for the next eight years. This allows for combined measures. The feasibility of technical solutions and whether the health benefits of reduced noise outweigh the costs will also be considered.
Expected investments over the next 8 years
- quieter asphalt on 51 kilometres of provincial road
- 14 kilometres of noise barriers
- speed reduction over 1.5 kilometres of provincial road (N521 and N248)
When the province begins work at a location, the surrounding community will determine which measures will be implemented and what they will look like.
Online viewer
The Noise Action Plan includes an online viewer. This tool allows residents to check noise levels at building façades per location. It also shows whether and which measures are expected in the next eight years.
