The Province of Utrecht is allocating over €15 million for additional measures on the M.A. Reinaldaweg (N210) in Lopik-Oost. Earlier this year, budget was already allocated for the construction of the new Graaf intersection. With this new investment, the province is also addressing the rest of the N210 in Lopik-Oost.

Provincial States made this decision on November 12 during the discussion of the Multi-Year Investment Plan for Mobility. The measures were developed together with the municipality of Lopik and a sounding board group of residents, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders.

The N210 in Lopik-Oost has been known for years as a bottleneck for traffic and safety. Especially the intersection with Lopikerweg Oost – locally known as the Graaf intersection – regularly causes delays and unsafe situations during rush hour. The province, together with the community, has designed a plan that takes into account safety, livability, traffic flow, and good integration into the landscape.

Additional measures

The following additional measures have been developed for the northern and southern parts of the N210 in Lopik-Oost:

  • Roundabout N210/N204: will be replaced by a traffic light-controlled T-junction, with 2x2 lanes in the directions of Lopik and IJsselstein.
  • Main carriageway between intersections N210/N204 and N210/Copenweg: will get an extra lane in both directions for better traffic flow.
  • Roundabout N210/Copenweg: will be replaced by a traffic light-controlled T-junction with 2x2 lanes. There will also be a bus stop with bicycle parking, and the nearby Lopik mobilization complex will get a new main entrance on Copenweg.
  • Agricultural traffic will be allowed on the main carriageway between S.L. van Alterenlaan and the N204. The provincial road will be adjusted accordingly. The maximum speed remains 80 km/h.
  • Parallel road between the new Graaf intersection and the N210/N204 intersection: will be converted into a 3.60-meter-wide bicycle path. Agricultural and motor vehicles are not allowed here.
  • Parallel road between the current Graaf intersection and the company Streetfurniture: will be designed as a bicycle path. Motorized traffic will be blocked here by a sluice. Between Streetfurniture and the N210/S.L. van Alterenlaan intersection, the road will be designed as a parallel road with shoulder reinforcement.
  • Bend in the N210 near the gas station: the main carriageway will be slightly adjusted and an extended guardrail will be installed in the central reservation.
  • Intersection N210/S.L. van Alterenlaan: will be improved with extra waiting space for traffic to and from Jaarsveld. For cyclists and pedestrians, there will be a safer crossing with a raised lane separation. A plateau will locally reduce the speed here to 60 km/h.

Follow-up and planning

In the next phase, the province will further develop the design, including greenery and integration into the landscape. Preparations will also start for procedures such as land acquisition, spatial planning, permits, and traffic decisions. Project implementation is planned for 2028-2029.
