What do you do with all that mowing residue in the roadside? In South Holland, things are made from it. After many pilots, Greenhub South Holland (opens in a new window) now shows how roadside grass and other mowing residues can be used on a large scale. In collaboration with more than 30 organizations – from municipalities and water boards to contractors and construction companies – work is being done towards a cleaner, greener province.
From Roadside Grass to Building Panel
In recent years, a solid foundation has been laid for processing roadside mowing residues into new raw materials and products. More than 120 tons of roadside grass have been collected. This mowing residue found surprising new destinations. For example, it was processed into sustainable building panels for garage boxes in Leiden, as well as into paper that is used for flyers from the Province of South Holland. In addition, Greenhub developed a joint data platform called ‘Mapping the Roadside’ and a new management model in which ownership is shared.
Big Ambitions
And this is just the beginning. The ambitions for the coming years are great. Greenhub aims to grow to a processing capacity of 30,000 tons of roadside mowing residue per year. This will make a significant contribution to the National Approach to Biobased Building, which aims for 30% of homes to consist of biobased material by 2030. Efforts are also being made to apply ecological roadside management throughout the province.
