In recent years, Park Vreugd & Rust in Voorburg has been restored. At the beginning of this century, the park, designed in the 17th century by the famous landscape architect Jan David Zocher, was at risk of falling into disrepair. Therefore, the Mooi Voorburg Foundation developed plans to restore the park. Together with the municipality and contractors, they have revitalized the park over the past years. On Saturday, March 7, the park (which is part of the South Holland Estates Zone) was officially reopened by Deputy Meindert Stolk, Alderman Marcel Belt, and Chairman of Mooi Voorburg: Joost Heuvelink.
Subsidy for Restoration
The restoration mainly focused on the cultural-historical elements. Among others, the historic greenhouse (now the clubhouse of the tennis association), the paths, sightlines, Zocher benches, entrance gate, various bridges, monumental vegetable garden walls, and the deer meadow were restored. This was made possible partly thanks to several subsidies from the province, totaling nearly 300,000 euros.

A Place to Be Proud Of
Meindert Stolk, Deputy for Heritage and Culture for the Province of South Holland: “It is good to see how our subsidy comes together here with the commitment of residents, historians, volunteers, and Middin. Thanks to them, this landscape park has not only been restored with honor but brought back to life. Vreugd & Rust is heritage that people dedicate themselves to with heart and soul, and precisely because of that, it remains a place to cherish, for now and for generations to come.”
Volunteers
A large restoration operation, such as here in Vreugd & Rust, is not possible without the efforts of countless volunteers. They contributed ideas to the restoration plan. Also, a book with an accompanying exhibition about the history of the park and its buildings has been published. This book was made possible thanks to historical research and with help from members of the Mooi Voorburg Foundation. Additionally, the animals in the deer park cannot be cared for without the support of clients from the care organization Middin.
Heritage Line Estates Zone
Park Vreugd & Rust is one of many estates, castles, and country houses within our provincial heritage line Estates Zone. This zone runs along the coast: from the north of our province to the Westland. About 80 organizations and parties work together here to preserve and make our heritage accessible.
Each year, initiators can apply for subsidies for their projects from the province.
Experience Our Heritage
On Castle Day, Whit Monday May 25, 2026, almost all locations in the South Holland Estates Zone will be open. Special activities will be organized then. Come and experience our heritage!
