The Province of South Holland is internationally active because some provincial challenges require an international approach, and we utilize European subsidies and innovations. Some challenges align with European ambitions, and we collaborate with regional and international partners. The province of South Holland has further intensified international collaborations in 2024 and aims to better seize opportunities in 2025 by working even more targeted, intensively, and effectively. This is outlined in the International Outlook 2025 and Reflection 2024 (opens in a new window).
Reflection 2024
In 2024, the first term of the Commission – Von Der Leyen (opens in a new window) came to an end. This year was primarily focused on completing ongoing legislative processes. There was little new policy, but the province did not remain idle. We provided input and amendment proposals on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (opens in a new window) and in the lobby of the Multiannual Financial Framework (opens in a new window).
We also made good use of European innovation funds in 2024 and actively participated in projects with other international partners. Furthermore, we worked on policy issues such as circular economy, sustainability of industry, water, and environment. Finally, at the request of the states, we explored together with the Economic Board South Holland how we can profile South Holland as an innovative region.
Deputy EU/International Mariëtte van Leeuwen emphasizes the importance of collaboration: International cooperation is not a choice, but a necessity. By combining our strengths with European and international partners, we can accelerate innovative solutions and contribute more effectively to sustainability and economic growth. In 2025, we will continue this collaboration more powerfully and purposefully.
Focus in 2025: Innovation and Greening
In 2025, we will focus internationally primarily on sustainability, industry, innovative economy, agriculture, and food supply. This aligns with the strategies of the new European Commission, such as the Competitiveness Compass (opens in a new window) and the Clean Industrial Deal (opens in a new window). The goal of the Clean Industrial Deal is to make the industry competitive and cleaner. As a province, we respond to the simplification of EU legislation and consider nature and environmental conservation.
South Holland knowledge institutions continue to actively contribute to European research programs in areas such as circularity, space, digitalization, climate, and energy. Additionally, there is a clear focus on defense and security.
With these ambitions, South Holland remains a strong player on the world stage, focused on sustainable progress and economic opportunities.
