Allocation of grants for the restoration of 39 Frisian monuments
Good news for owners of 39 Frisian national monuments, municipal monuments, and characteristic buildings. In 2026, they can get to work on their plans for maintenance or restoration. One of the buildings is the Badpaviljoen (Bath Pavilion) in Hindeloopen, whose funding was finalised last week.
A total of €2.8 million in national and provincial funds is being allocated for this purpose. This will be used to restore 21 windmills, 8 churches, and 10 other various objects in Fryslân. In September, 52 applications for grants were submitted, of which 39 have now been approved.
Deputy Eke Folkerts is pleased with the commitment and attention being given to the upcoming restorations. “As Deputy for Heritage, I am delighted that we can financially support and address these monuments in Fryslân together with the national government. We must take good care of our heritage. Heritage tells us a great deal about the identity of our province, the Story of Fryslân. Moreover, it keeps our towns and villages beautiful.”
Funding for monuments will also be available in 2026, and the scheme will be similar to this one. For more information, visit: Subsidieregeling monumenten Fryslân | Fryslan
Park Huize Olterterp
A particularly special project being undertaken with this grant is the restoration of a green national monument: Park Huize Olterterp. The park surrounding the headquarters of the nature and landscape organisation It Fryske Gea is a national monument due to its distinctive landscaping style. It is believed that garden architects Vlaskamp and Roodbaard shaped the park during different periods. A notable feature of Park Huize Olterterp is the relief around the pond, in which the white manor house is reflected.
In addition to preserving centuries-old trees, many new trees, ornamental shrubs, and flower beds will be planted. With the restoration of the historic, winding pathways, visitors will soon once again be able to fully enjoy the beautiful views in the garden.
