People with Obesity Less Satisfied than in 2023
Since 2021, the percentage of people who are satisfied with their weight has been declining. In 2024, slightly fewer people were satisfied with their weight than in 2023. In 2024, 62 percent of adults were satisfied with their weight, in 2023 it was 64 percent. The decline in satisfaction is mainly seen in people with obesity. In 2023, almost a quarter of them were satisfied with their weight, and in the years before it fluctuated around this share. In 2024, this dropped to 18 percent. Satisfaction among people with moderate overweight remained the same compared to 2023.
14 Percent Not Satisfied with Weight
In 2024, 14 percent said they were not satisfied with their weight, and 23 percent were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.Among people with a healthy weight, 83 percent were satisfied. This is much lower among people with overweight, namely 43 percent. The severity of the overweight also plays a role: just over half (52 percent) of people with moderate overweight were satisfied with their own weight, while this was only 18 percent among people with obesity.
Men Are More Often Satisfied
About two-thirds of men (66 percent) were satisfied with their weight, while this was less for women at 59 percent. The fact that women are less often satisfied applies to both women with a healthy weight and those with moderate overweight. Among women with moderate overweight, 44 percent were satisfied with their weight, among men with moderate overweight, 58 percent were satisfied. There is no difference in satisfaction between men and women with obesity.
Younger and Older People More Often Satisfied with Their Weight
As people age, they often gain excess weight. Among 18 to 25-year-olds, 72 percent had a healthy weight, among 55 to 65-year-olds it was 38 percent. The satisfaction of people under 65 is less as age increases, and is lowest in the age groups between 45 and 65 years. People over 65 are relatively satisfied again, despite the fact that the percentage with a healthy weight in this group is hardly higher. Younger age groups are also more often satisfied. Among 18 to 35-year-olds, about two-thirds were satisfied with their weight.
