August 2025 is the busiest month with 50 thousand commercial flights (transport of passengers and freight for payment) and 7.6 million passengers transported. Sunday, August 3 is the busiest day. On that day, more than 263 thousand passengers pass through the terminals of one of the five national airports.
The quietest day of the year is Wednesday, January 15 with nearly 130 thousand passengers transported. Persistent fog caused Schiphol Airport and Eindhoven Airport to cancel hundreds of flights that day.
Although the total number of passengers grew compared to 2024, this was not the case at all airports. Schiphol, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam transported more passengers, while Groningen, but especially Maastricht, saw a decline in passenger numbers. Schiphol handled nearly 478 thousand flights and 68.8 million passengers in 2025. This accounts for 88 percent of all flights and travelers to and from the Netherlands. Although the number of passengers transported increased by nearly 3 percent compared to 2024, it is still 4 percent less than in 2019, the year before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rotterdam The Hague Airport and Eindhoven Airport are the only two national airports in the Netherlands where more passengers passed through the terminals in 2025 than in 2024 and 2019. With over 7 million (+2.3 percent) air passengers, Eindhoven Airport remains the Netherlands second airport for passenger transport. Nearly 2.4 million travelers travel to and from Rotterdam The Hague Airport, an increase of over 5 percent compared to 2024. Via Rotterdam and Eindhoven, respectively 12.5 and 3.5 percent more air passengers travel in 2025 than in 2019.
Of the 78.4 million air passengers flying to and from the Netherlands in 2025, nearly 41.5 million travelers flew within the European Union and 16.5 million to and from other countries within Europe. Together, this is 74 percent of all passengers.
Of the intercontinental travelers, over 36 percent flew to and from North America and 31 percent to and from Asia.
In 2019, most passengers flew from a Dutch airport to and from the United Kingdom. Since 2021, Spain has been the most popular destination for air passengers departing from or arriving in the Netherlands. The most popular connection in 2025 is Barcelona, El Prat airport with 1.9 million passengers.
The air freight transported to and from Maastricht Aachen Airport increased by over 41 percent to 41.6 thousand tons in 2025. The air freight via this airport accounts for only 3 percent of the total air freight to and from the Netherlands. With 1.4 million tons, over 4 percent less than in 2024, 97 percent of all air freight was handled via Amsterdam Schiphol. More than 50 percent of the air freight transported to and from Asia was handled via both airports in 2025.
