On April 9, 2025, the aviation authority of the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT Aviation Authority), like other aviation authorities in Europe, signed the ¡Conspicuity-declaration of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This commits the ILT Aviation Authority to promote the use of devices and data that enhance the electronic visibility of general aviation (GA). The goal is to strengthen safety within GA and reduce the risk of mid-air collisions. The signing took place during the EASA Conference on avoiding collisions in the air at AERO 2025 in Friedrichshafen.
Better visibility of other airspace users and obstacles
One of the main risks for GA is mid-air collisions. In EASA member states, fatal collisions occur on average 6 times a year, resulting in the loss of 13 lives each year. EASA aims to promote the development and use of devices that transmit ¡Conspicuity data, such as ADS-B or ADS-L. With these tools, the pilot receives a signal when another aircraft with iConspicuity is nearby and is electronically visible to other airspace users. This leads to better situational awareness. Staying vigilant remains essential; ¡Conspicuity does not replace the principle of ‘see and avoid’ within GA.
How can you improve your electronic visibility?
Do you already have a Mode S transponder? Then you can improve your electronic visibility by upgrading it to have ADS-B out. If you do not yet have iConspicuity equipment, the aviation authority advises you to acquire it. Additionally, the aircraft must have a so-called traffic display. A cheaper solution is to download an application on a tablet or mobile device that displays iConspicuity-data.
Analysis data for safety improvements
Conspicuity data allows the aviation sector to analyze incidents and accidents more quickly. With better data on GA movements, airspace design can be optimized, improving access for all airspace users, including new technologies.
Moreover, aircraft equipped with this technology can be located more quickly in emergencies. Thus, ¡Conspicuity contributes to a safer airspace for a growing number of participants in Europe. The use of data and information resulting from the initiative will comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
