Her Majesty Queen Máxima will visit the Monastery Quarter in Veghel on Wednesday afternoon, September 3. Inspired by the ideals of the Franciscan Sisters who have been connected to Veghel for 180 years, a new residential area has been developed here on their initiative, focusing on care for one another. Social institutions have found their place here, and new homes have been created for people with and without care indications.
The Sisters in Veghel have long played a pivotal role in care and education. As the monastic community became smaller and more vulnerable, they decided to let their ideals live on in a new form. This became the Monastery Quarter: a living community where people and organizations support each other and engage in activities together. Queen Máxima will start her visit with a conversation with the nineteen Sisters who still live in the Monastery Quarter. She will then visit the laundry, the billiard room, and the chapel. The laundry is run by people distanced from the labor market. The billiard room is a meeting place for anyone feeling lonely. The chapel will, after renovation, provide shelter for several social organizations.
A conversation will take place in the chapel with representatives from the municipality of Meijerijstad, Zenzo Social Real Estate, LeefGoed Veghel, and so-called neighborhood connectors who voluntarily dedicate themselves to their fellow residents in the neighborhood.
The visit will conclude in the adjacent apartment complex where the Queen will speak with some residents of the Monastery Quarter about their experiences in this caring neighborhood.
