Her Majesty Queen Máxima will open the circular wooden residential building SAWA in Rotterdam on Tuesday afternoon, November 18. The building comprises over a hundred apartments and has been developed on a large scale in a circular and biobased manner, with attention to nature and affordable housing.
Queen Máxima will open the building together with residents on the communal deck. She will then take a tour and speak with stakeholders, such as residents, other users, and developers. During the opening, the developer, builder, and ecologist will explain the concept.
The design of SAWA is inspired by the terraced rice fields in Indonesia. The building is designed as a living ecosystem, incorporating biodiversity. Integrated planters, native plants, and nesting boxes for birds and bats are included in the design.
Nearly half of the homes have been realized in the mid-rent sector. The apartments feature their own terraces and balconies, as well as a communal living deck. The concept also includes shared facilities, such as a vegetable garden, shared cars, and tools.
