Sustainability of the existing built environment is necessary to reduce our energy consumption. Currently, the capacity to carry out the required energy renovations is insufficient. Innovative digital solutions aimed at optimizing and increasing execution capacity contribute to this. For example, replacing manual work or standardization. The goal of this call is to develop innovative digital solutions that enable accelerated energy renovations and thus contribute to the sustainability of the existing built environment.
To ensure a good connection with practice, private parties are involved in the four projects that are now starting. They also contribute financially to the projects. A total of 2.4 million euros in co-financing has been raised in addition to the NWO funding of 5.3 million euros.

PRE-MADONA works on a data-driven digital ecosystem in which large-scale building renovations can be optimized and accelerated. In co-creation with 11 housing, infrastructure, and energy parties, we develop Digital Twins and Machine Learning methods to solve the data and digitization problems that hinder the scaling of the current renovation process. During this development, the governance of digital renovations is also integrated. The intended ecosystem ultimately contributes to mass-customization of socially optimal renovation plans. Through the integrated approach, parties on both the demand and supply sides of renovation processes can be clustered, permits processed faster, and ultimately design and execution accelerated. This leads to a future-proof, digitally-supported renovation approach.

VR_retrofit_4U: looking faster towards a sustainable future. In VR-Retrofit-4U, resident consultants from the contractor will work with tenants to get a good picture of the plans to make their home or neighborhood more sustainable. We show what those plans entail. This makes it easy to engage and collaborate with the housing association or the contractor. Currently, creating VR models takes too much time to really participate in decision-making. By making the models smart and fast, residents no longer have to sign at the cross, and a sustainable future will come faster.
NWO-KIC: innovation programs in the knowledge and innovation covenant
NWO develops innovation programs aimed at the societal challenges of the Netherlands with the goal of realizing impact for the economy, people, and society. These programs emphasize collaboration between knowledge institutions, private parties, and government. The results contribute to realizing economic opportunities. It is therefore essential that private parties invest in each research project.
