Illegal Growshop Geldersestraat: Two Persons Arrested

Gebied: Amersfoort

With a suspicion of undermining activities, the Municipality of Amersfoort conducted a control at Geldersestraat on Tuesday, February 18, with support from the police. A large growshop was found in the building, where materials for growing cannabis were sold. Two people have been arrested.

Growshop

On Tuesday, February 18, around 11:30 AM, the municipality and police entered the building. They found various items often used to set up cannabis cultivation sites. There were also barrels with chemical substances. The fire department was called to investigate the substances. Fortunately, they were not dangerous. There is a suspicion that liquids used in cannabis cultivation were being made in the building. One person was present in the building. This 52-year-old man from Nijkerkerveen was arrested. Upon searching him, he had several thousand euros in cash on him.

Search

The police also decided to search his home in Nijkerkerveen. Upon arrival, the police saw a 78-year-old woman from Leusden coming out of the house. Upon searching the woman, the police found more than 20,000 euros in cash. The woman was then arrested on suspicion of money laundering. The police seized the money, as well as various data carriers.

Legislation and Enforcement

The building at Geldersestraat will be emptied by the municipality and police on Wednesday, February 19. Until 2015, growshops were legal. Since the Growshop Act that year, it has been prohibited to intentionally provide materials or advice for someone else to cultivate cannabis (professionally). This means that growshops targeting cannabis are prohibited. The police are conducting further investigations into the matter. The Municipality of Amersfoort is considering possible administrative measures.
