On Thursday, April 9, a total of 8346 passersby were checked with radar in West Brabant during the National Speed Marathon over 24 hours. Officers from the traffic team issued fines to 760 of them. The drivers licenses of 3 drivers were confiscated because they were driving more than 50 km/h over the limit.
In Sluis (Zeeland Flanders), the traffic team checked 3379 passersby on the main road on April 8, 9, and 10, of which no less than 1018 were in violation. The highest recorded speed there was 125 km/h where 60 is allowed.
This brings the total count of violations to 1878 for now.
The checks are aimed at increasing road safety and ultimately reducing the number of traffic casualties. Speed has a significant impact on a vehicles stopping distance, which is a major cause of many collisions.
The Speed Week runs until Sunday.
