After the police made several arrests of individuals who set off heavy explosive fireworks in the crowd, a large group of rioters violently turned against the mobile unit. Such disturbances not only impact police officers but also visitors and passersby. The investigation in Eindhoven, led by the Public Prosecution Service, began an inquiry into the events of that day. In recent months, dozens of suspects have been identified through numerous camera images, who committed extreme acts of violence.
In the subsequent investigation, many hours of camera footage were reviewed and analyzed; very labor-intensive work. Perpetrators who were seen using the most and most intense violence were selected and became subjects of further investigation into their identity. A considerable number of these individuals have already been identified by police officers. However, there was also a group of perpetrators whose identity was not immediately known. To uncover their names, we used investigative communication and asked citizens for help. Photos of these individuals were, or will be, distributed via social media at a later stage.
Arrests
Today, Tuesday, August 5, the investigation resulted in an action day, during which the first nine suspects of public violence on Sunday, May 18, were arrested. These are men aged 22 to 49, from Eindhoven, Veldhoven, Nuenen, Aarle-Rixtel, and Utrecht. All these suspects have been detained and are being questioned about their suspected involvement in the riots. They will not only be prosecuted criminally by the Public Prosecution Service but will also receive a proposed administrative measure. Where possible, damage claims will also be pursued.
Investigation continues
We do not accept such misconduct as occurred on that fateful Sunday. Such disturbances impact not only police officers but also visitors and passersby who want to make it a celebration as it should be. The arrests today are a beginning. We do not rule out that more will follow.
Area ban
Suspects will not only be prosecuted criminally but will also receive a proposed administrative measure. This means that identified suspects will receive a letter from the mayor stating that he intends to impose an area ban for a maximum duration of two years. They will have two weeks to respond, after which a decision will be made. This means that during that period, they may not be present within a designated area around the football stadium. If they do, they may be arrested.
Safe football
Football is part of Eindhoven and is part of a vibrant city. Matches of professional football organizations generally bring a lot of joy to residents, visitors, and entrepreneurs, but sometimes also come with disturbances and other forms of insecurity.
Eindhoven strives for Safe and hospitable football. This means that football is accessible and everyone feels welcome in and around the stadium. Individuals who engage in misconduct will be punished and excluded. All partners, together with supporters, are committed to preventing violations of the (legal) order. If incidents occur despite this, the perpetrators will face the consequences. A sporting experience should not involve (large-scale) police action. Football should be a celebration. Also in the new season that is approaching.
