Caribbean Netherlands – Fair, safe, and healthy work is what everyone in the Caribbean Netherlands should be able to enjoy. Recently, the Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) unit of the National Office for the Caribbean Netherlands (RCN) has seen an increase in questions and reports regarding work. At the same time, situations are often more complex, which has made the work of the Labor Affairs and Labor Inspection departments more intensive. Therefore, the approach is being strengthened, with more capacity and more attention to information and support.
Due to developments in recent years – such as economic and population growth, an increase in the legal minimum wage, and developments regarding labor legislation – the need for clear explanations has increased. At the same time, the importance of good supervision and control over compliance with the rules is growing. More questions are coming in about wage payment, work permits, working hours, sick leave, vacation days, and dismissal procedures.
The SZW unit keeps a close eye on developments in the labor market. Different developments occur on each island, so the information needs and reports also differ. Therefore, it is assessed what is needed on each island. Attention is given to both employers and employees.
Strengthening Supervision and Support
To respond well to these signals, the working methods of the Labor Affairs and Labor Inspection departments are being gradually strengthened. Additional staff have been hired, inspectors are receiving training, and efforts are being made to improve information provision. This includes targeted inspections, an active approach to reports, and preparation for new informational moments for employers and employees.
The goal remains the same: work that is fair (such as good payment), safe (without risks of injury), and healthy (where people do not suffer from physical or mental complaints).
Where can one go?
Good working conditions arise from collaboration. Employers, employees, and the government each have a role in this. A good relationship between employer and employee often helps to prevent problems. If that does not work, or if someone doubts what is allowed or not, they can contact the SZW unit.
