To ensure the supply of electricity and drinking water in Bonaire after April 1, 2026, the fuel supply in Bonaire must be improved in the coming months. As of April 1, 2026, the temporary permits with reduced safety requirements for the two existing fuel storage locations in Bonaire will expire. The involved ministries inform the House of Representatives about the changed situation and the role of the Kingdom regarding Bonaires fuel supply. The Executive Council of Bonaire is simultaneously informing the Island Council.
The new fuel terminal at the Airport South location cannot be built in time before the temporary permits of the existing fuel terminals expire. There is also a lack of support for a fuel storage at this location in the long term. To guarantee safe fuel storage in Bonaire by April 1, 2026, the existing fuel storage facilities in Hato and at the airport will be renovated to meet the original safety requirements. Local parties have indicated that this is feasible by April 1, 2026. For the long-term fuel supply, the Public Body Bonaire (OLB) is in contact with a potential buyer to restart the bankrupt oil storage in the northern part of the island.
Since BBT (Bonaire Bon Transition, 100% owned by the Ministry of KGG) will not build a new fuel terminal in Bonaire in the short and long term, a phasing-out plan is being made to dissolve the part of BBT that was established for this purpose. This means there is no longer a policy role for the Kingdom in the fuel supply, and this will again become a local task. A point of attention here is the 5 million euros currently available in BBT aimed at fuel storage in Bonaire from the regional envelope. It is being explored how these funds can be used for the fuel supply of Bonaire. Additionally, it is being considered whether and how the part of BBT involved in the sustainability of Bonaire can continue to exist.
