Recently, the Central Bureau of Statistics launched a public campaign to explain the value of data to the public on Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius. The CBS is, after all, the data collector and statistician for the Caribbean Netherlands. Explanations about the value of data and whether something is a fact or an opinion are provided in guest lectures to all primary school children from the highest classes on Bonaire. There are also plans to give guest lectures on Saba and St. Eustatius.
First Lessons Given on Bonaire
Why is it important to know something about the islands population? The population on Bonaire has been growing for years. In the last 10 years, the population has increased by 40%, and in the last 15 years by 60%. Children are explained that based on population figures, plans can be made about whether more schools need to be added or other facilities. Factual figures are needed to make assessments and conduct social debates.
Fascinating Topic
The guest lectures are provided by Esther Meijer-Sedney (CBS Caribbean Netherlands office) and Arjan van der Meer (CBS Netherlands office).
Meijer: “Children find the topic of population fascinating. When we tell them that 1,451 residents have come to Bonaire last year, that number only makes sense when we explain that six new residents have joined for every 100 residents, either through birth or immigration (Bonaire officially now has a total of 26,584 residents as of January 1, 2025).”
Van der Meer: “What facilities would you like to see in the future? More play facilities are often mentioned, but also a candy tree in your garden where delicious things grow! The fact that they participate well in the lesson, listen, and give good answers means they find it interesting.”
