From July 14 to August 8, the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) in collaboration with Museum Batavialand organizes the Field School Ship Archaeology Flevoland. Students gain practical experience in ship archaeology during this training program. This year, the oldest wreck of a water ship in the Netherlands will be investigated for the last time. On Saturday, August 2, the excavation in Zeewolde can be visited.
Program: workshops and excavation
The program of the Field School Ship Archaeology Flevoland is twofold; at Museum Batavialand, students perform tasks related to the reconstruction of the water ship ZM22 and attend workshops on shipbuilding, conservation, and the ship archaeological collection. At the excavation in Zeewolde, a shipwreck will be investigated.
Last year shipwreck ZO31
Since 2022, the shipwreck ZO31 has been investigated by students and volunteers. Under the guidance of professionals, a shipwreck from the 16th century has been excavated. The wreck is located in the former Zuiderzee, in present-day Zeewolde. Research shows that it is a so-called water ship, a fishing vessel with a water-holding compartment to transport fish alive. This year, the shipwreck will be investigated for the last time, and the Field School will take place at a different location next year. Curious about the shipwreck ZO31? It can be found at MaSS. Also, this summer, some finds from recent years, such as the pointed nose jug, can be seen at Museum Batavialand.
