Do you want to take a look behind the scenes of a large-scale construction project? Then Saturday, June 21, 2025, is the day for you!
During the Day of Construction, construction combination Savera IJsselbruggen and Rijkswaterstaat will open the construction site of the A12 bridges to the public from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Access to the construction site is located under the bridge on the Arnhem/Velp side of the IJssel (Broekdijk/Schaapsdijk).
The renovation of the A12 IJssel bridges is a large and complex project. Many people do not notice much of it, as the work is done under the bridges. The Day of Construction is a unique opportunity to experience how work is done on the bridges.
Walking over the A12
Those who dare can join a guided tour. You will climb 10 meters up on the scaffolding and view the work and the bridge from underneath. You will also walk over the closed highway A12. For safety reasons, this can only be done with sturdy, closed shoes and long pants. Small children and babies who must be carried are unfortunately not allowed on the scaffolding.
Building and welding bridges
There is more to do and see. You can get information at stalls with photos and videos about the bridges and the work. People from Savera IJsselbruggen and Rijkswaterstaat will be happy to tell you more.
There are also stalls about other projects in the area, such as the widening of the A12 and the expansion of the A15 (ViA15) , the River Climate Park IJsselpoort, A12 Smart Travel and the maintenance of the floodplains.
For children, there is a treasure hunt, a bridge building workshop, and a river current table. There is also a welding workshop.
Come by bike
There are no parking spaces at the construction site. So please come by bike.
Renovation of steel A12 IJssel bridges
The steel bridges of the A12 near Arnhem are already 60 years old. They need to be repaired now. During the renovation, a lot of welding will be done on the underside of the bridges. Savera IJsselbruggen will place nearly 2 km of extra steel beams to make the bridges stronger. About 2,000 welds will also be improved, and 2 support points and the inspection paths will be renewed.
The renovation will be completed in 2026. After that, the bridges can last another 30 years without major maintenance. The renovation of the IJssel bridges is being done in an innovative way. Rijkswaterstaat and Savera IJsselbruggen are collaborating on the design and execution of the renovation. This ensures that the work proceeds better and without surprises.
