As of Thursday, July 10 at 19:00, the new temporary bicycle bridge at Uitwellingerga is open for cyclists, pedestrians, and mobility scooters. The bridge was closed for repairs in recent days.
The movable part of the bridge has been removed and a fixed bicycle bridge has been installed.
New Traffic Situation
Cyclists, pedestrians, and mobility scooters will be directed over the bridge from the south side starting July 10. Signs and text carts are in place to indicate the new traffic situation. In the next phase, a temporary steel deck will be placed. The bridge is expected to be fully open to all traffic in the 3rd week of September.
Temporary Fixed Bridge Due to Closure of Bridge Uitwellingerga
Bridge Uitwellingerga has reached the end of its technical lifespan. Research into the structure of the bridge indicated that repairs are no longer possible. Therefore, we are installing a temporary fixed bridge in place of the current bridge. This bridge cannot be operated for shipping.
Since Monday, June 16, 2025, we have started work on the temporary fixed bridge at Uitwellingerga. The first part, the bicycle bridge, is now accessible for cyclists, pedestrians, and mobility scooters.
Main Navigation Lemmer-Delfzijl
Bridge Uitwellingerga is part of the Main Navigation Lemmer-Delfzijl (HLD). The HLD runs through Friesland and Groningen and is one of the most important waterways in the Netherlands. The waterway is of great importance for the regional and national economy. The bridge does not meet the requirements for a main navigation route and is due for replacement, which is why it is closed to car and agricultural traffic.
Since 2014, we have been the owners and managers of the waterway and will be working over the coming decades on various improvements to ensure safe, smooth, and sustainable passage for, among others, class Va ships.
