Rijkswaterstaat has been working for some time on the ecological restoration of the Maas. For the Afgedamde Maas, the final Project Decision has now been established for 3 measures between Well and Poederoijen. This decision is available for inspection for the last time.
Over time, human intervention has significantly changed this river landscape. Many of the original aquatic plants, fish, and small aquatic creatures in the Afgedamde Maas have disappeared or are now only present in small numbers. The restoration measures align with the European Water Framework Directive, which aims to improve and protect our surface waters. Because as biodiversity increases, so does the ecological water quality.
What will happen?
By restoring tidal channels, we respond to the daily fluctuation in water levels (tidal action) that is still somewhat noticeable in the Afgedamde Maas. The water rises and falls daily by 20 to 30 cm due to ebb and flow. Isolated channels and shallow marshy banks will also be created.
The measures in outline
- Doornwaard (near Bern): construction of a tidal channel connected to the river. For this, the sand extraction pond will be partially filled with clay. A previously isolated channel will also be extended (the Zwin).
- Slijkwellsewaard (at Wellseind): transforming the southern channel into an isolated channel and the northern channel into an attached tidal channel. Nature-friendly banks will be created in the basin-shaped inlet in the floodplain.
- Poederoijense Waard : construction of an isolated channel, consisting of an eastern and western part.
Project Decision Established
The Draft Project Decision was available for inspection from August 21 to October 1, 2024. 19 responses were received. The response document states how these have been processed. The final Project Decision is available for inspection until Tuesday, June 3, 2025, on the website of Platform Participation , where the response document can also be found. During this period, it is possible to appeal to the Council of State. The website describes how this works.
The documents can also be viewed at the Rijkswaterstaat office in Den Bosch (Magistratenlaan 82). You can make an appointment for this via 088-797 48 80.
