Between 2026 and 2028, the Molen Bridge in Kampen will undergo major maintenance. In preparation, Rijkswaterstaat is testing a more sustainable type of paint. Test areas with water-based paint, a more environmentally friendly alternative, have been applied in various places on the bridge.
Sustainable Paint for Molen Bridge
When painting bridges, paint based on turpentine is usually used, but it is harmful to humans and the environment. Therefore, we are investigating whether water-based paint is a good alternative.
During the maintenance of the Molen Bridge, test areas have been applied to assess whether this more sustainable paint protects just as well and lasts long. This is how we work towards a future-proof way to maintain bridges.
Test Areas on the Molen Bridge
On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, test areas with water-based paint were applied to the Molen Bridge. These areas are located on different parts of the bridge. The test shows how well the paint holds up. This means whether the paint adheres well and is resistant to weather conditions.
After 1 year, the test areas will be evaluated to gain more insight into the quality and sustainability of this environmentally friendly alternative.
The Molen Bridge in a Sustainable Jacket
Water-based paint has been used for infrastructure projects in countries like Denmark and Sweden for some time. By testing this paint on the Molen Bridge, we can see how the product performs under local conditions. If the test is successful, the Molen Bridge will soon receive a new, sustainable jacket.
