Rijkswaterstaat is carrying out major maintenance on the Linne weir. The work will cause inconvenience for (moped) cyclists and pedestrians; they will need to detour during certain periods. The first inconvenience will start in the week of May 5, 2025. The work will be carried out by contractor Mourik Infra BV.
Maintenance of the Stoney Section of the Linne Weir
The maintenance takes place on the so-called stoney section of the weir. This is the higher part of the weir, with the concrete pillars. Steel sluices hang between the pillars. At the top of the stoney section, there is a steel operating bridge. This contains the mechanism used to adjust the sluices. This is done from the control center in Maasbracht.
Work on the Operating Bridge of the Linne Weir
We will remove the operating bridge over the stoney section and take it to another location. There, the bridge will be conserved (painted). We will also renew the sluices that regulate the water discharge. Furthermore, we will install a new drive. To carry out the work, the weir opening will be drained using a drainage tub. This will be placed against the weir, allowing the water to be pumped out. In the drained tub, we will carry out concrete repairs.
Planning and Inconvenience at the Linne Weir
For the work such as removing and then replacing the operating bridge and the sluices, the bicycle bridge will be closed to cyclists. In 2025, this will be for 2 periods:
- May 5 to May 23, 2025
- September 2025 (exact dates yet to be determined)
During the periods when the bicycle bridge is unavailable, we will redirect (moped) cyclists and pedestrians. The detour will be indicated with signs.
Work in 2024, 2025, and 2026
We will divide the total maintenance of the stoney section of the weir over 3 years. Each year we will work during the low water period, from mid-April to mid-October. In 2024, we performed maintenance on the southern opening of the stoney section.
In 2025, we will work on the middle opening. Lastly, the northern opening on the poiree side (the lower part of the weir) will be addressed in 2026. After completion, we will have replaced all sluices, renovated the operating bridges, and replaced the drive line.
End of Lifespan of the Weirs on the Maas
The 7 weirs on the Maas are nearing the end of their lifespan. Therefore, major maintenance or possible replacement is needed. We are investigating which approach is suitable for each weir to ensure they last many more years. The weirs cannot all be tackled at once; this will be done in phases.
More information about the work can be found on the page Maas: project GRONST; major maintenance of the weirs.
